The 13th Annual Memorial Walk/Run was held the morning of Friday May 13th, 2005. Despite the cloudy skies, the rain held off long enough for the event to take place smoothly.
The event was coordinated by the Leech Lake Diabetes Fitness Staff which include: Donovan Staples, Fitness Assistant; Nina Aitken, Fitness Assistant and Lois Brown, Fitness Program Director.
The "Old" Cass Lake-Bena High School Gym was the site where participants registered for the event and for door prizes, snacks were on hand and blood pressure and blood sugar screenings were available.
Volunteers Genny Sherman and Dan Fairbanks helped at the registration table where participants registered for the event and to receive a commemorative ribbon and t-shirt.
There were plenty of door prizes to be given away, including bicycles, skateboards, various sport balls and swimming gear.
Volunteers Elaine Regguinti and Patricia Ryan Ferris were on hand to take blood sugars and blood pressures.
The walk/run started at the "Old" Cass Lake-Bena High School Gymnasium and went as far as the Pike Bay Town Hall. Participants could walk/run a 1-mile or a 3-mile distance. Volunteers manned the water stations at the 1/2-mile turn around point and 1.5 mile turn around point.
Leech Lake Tribal Police held off traffic for the safety of the participants. Seen here is Sargent Ken Washington blocking off Main Street.
Camdyn Fineday, age 4, runs past Fitness director Lois Brown and Donovan Staples, Fitness Assistant.
Participants look on as door prizes are being given away.
The Memory Wall was available for those who wished to write names and post pictures of loved ones who have passed on.
The Leech Lake Diabetes Fitness Program would like to thank all of programs who lent us items used for the walk/run. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers who donated their time and creativity!
