Registering to Vote

Before you can vote, you must register. You must also update your registration if you have moved, changed your name, or have not voted in the last four years.

You may vote if you:

  • are at least 18 years of age
  • are a US citizen
  • are a Minnesota resident for at least 20 days before the election
  • have the right to vote because, if you have been convicted of a felony, your felony sentence has expired (been completed) or you have been discharged from your sentence
  • are not under a guardianship in which the court order revokes the ward's right to vote
  • are not legally incompetent

Voter Registration Card

Follow these instructions to register:

Please follow these steps to successfully complete your voter registration application.

Box #1:  Check the box to indicate whether you are a U.S. citizen and whether you will be at least 18-years-old on or before Election Day.  If you answer “No” to either of these questions, you are NOT eligible to vote in Minnesota in the next election.

Boxes #2 – #5:  Fill in these sections by printing your name and the address where you live.

Box #6:  If mail cannot be delivered to your residence, provide a Post Office (P.O.) Box.  This information is required by law.

Box #7:  Fill in your date of birth.  This is to help confirm you will be at least 18-years-old on election day.

Box #8:  Fill in your phone number.  This is not required, but is very helpful if voter registration office employees have questions about your application.

Box #9:  If known, fill in your school district name or number.

Box #10a:  You are required to provide your Minnesota Drivers' License number or Minnesota Identification card number if you have one.

Box #10b:  If you do not have a Minnesota Drivers' License or Minnesota Identification card, you are required to provide the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number.   If you have none of these forms of identification, write “NONE” in box #10b.  This is required by law.

Box #11:  Fill in your email address.  This is not required, but it is another way for voter registration office employees to contact you if they have questions about your application.

Box #12:  Fill in your previous name if you were previously registered to vote under a different name.

Box #13:  Fill in your previous address where you were last registered, if you previously were registered to vote.

Box #14:  Check the box if you want information on becoming an election judge.  If you choose to check the box, your voter registration office will contact you with more information.

Box # 15:  You are required by law to swear to an oath certifying the information you completed on the form.  Read the oath carefully before you sign and date the application.

Congratulations!

After signing the application, place it in an envelope and mail it to your voter registration office.

If you are registering by mail for the first time in Minnesota, you may need to bring identification to the polling place on Election Day.

If your application is not received by the county you live in at least three weeks before the election, you will not be listed on the roster and you will need to register on Election Day in order to vote.

After your application is received, you will be mailed a postcard with information on your polling place and what election districts exist in where you reside.  Keep this postcard for reference on Election Day.
